Supreme Court Reacts Firmly to Lawyer’s Remark on Women Judges Representation

In a stern response to a lawyer’s remark regarding the representation of women judges in the Supreme Court, a bench led by Justice Surya Kant and Justice Ujjal Bhuyan warned the lawyer to refrain from making inflammatory comments. The remarks were made during the hearing of a petition seeking 33% reservation for women lawyers in the Delhi High Court Bar Association (DHCBA).
Justice Surya Kant’s Strong Warning

The issue arose when a lawyer pointed out the low number of women judges in the Supreme Court, suggesting that such an issue was being raised by lawyers at the Delhi High Court. Reacting sharply, Justice Surya Kant said:

"If you are to play to the gallery by saying all these things, then please do. Say it 10 times. You are adding fuel to the fire. Let the media hear it. Don't mess with the court. Enough is enough. Pathetic."
He further emphasized that such remarks were inappropriate and unprofessional, undermining the decorum of the bar.

Court’s Response and Future Hearing

The bench, visibly irritated, refused to hear any further explanation from the Delhi High Court Bar Association and stated that it would proceed with the core issue—the matter of gender-based reservation for women lawyers.

The Supreme Court has scheduled the matter for final arguments on November 29, with a verdict to be pronounced three days later, on December 2.
The Larger Issue of Gender Representation in Legal Spaces

The remarks reflect a broader ongoing debate about gender representation in India’s judicial system. The petition, which seeks a 33% reservation for women lawyers in the DHCBA, is part of a larger push for increased female representation in legal and judicial spaces, addressing issues of gender imbalance in professional fields like law. The Supreme Court’s firm stance highlights its intention to focus on substantive legal arguments rather than provocative statements.
