Supreme Court Reopens for 2025; CJI Sanjiv Khanna Greets Lawyers, Updates Mentioning Procedure

On Thursday, the Supreme Court of India reopened after its winter vacation, which lasted from December 21, 2024, to January 1, 2025. Marking the first working day of the new year, Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna extended his heartfelt New Year wishes to the lawyers and litigants present.

“I wish you all a happy new year. May you have a happy new year, your families…,” said the CJI at the outset of the day’s proceedings, setting a cordial tone for the judicial year.

Change in Mentioning Procedure

During the proceedings, CJI Khanna addressed a technical issue affecting the email system used for requesting urgent listings. “I am told the email for mentioning is not working. You can move the physical letters accordingly,” the CJI remarked. He further informed the court that such letters would be reviewed in the afternoon, with appropriate orders issued for listing the cases.

This procedural update follows CJI Khanna’s earlier reform aimed at streamlining the process for urgent listings. After assuming office, Justice Khanna discontinued the practice of oral submissions for urgent mentions, requiring lawyers to send emails or written letters instead.

A Shift from Tradition

Traditionally, lawyers have mentioned their cases before the Chief Justice-led bench at the start of daily proceedings to request urgent, out-of-turn hearings. However, the shift to email or letter-based submissions reflects the CJI’s efforts to modernize and regulate the process, ensuring efficiency and consistency in handling urgent cases.

Looking Ahead

The resumption of judicial work in the new year comes with renewed focus on procedural efficiency and justice delivery. CJI Khanna’s leadership has been characterized by efforts to improve court administration and prioritize systemic reforms.

As the Supreme Court embarks on another year, the legal fraternity and litigants alike will closely follow the impact of these procedural changes, ensuring the judiciary remains accessible and responsive to urgent matters.
