Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor has approached the Supreme Court, challenging a trial court’s summons in a defamation case filed over his controversial comment comparing Prime Minister Narendra Modi to a scorpion. The trial court has directed Tharoor to appear on September 10 to address the allegations arising from his statement at the Bangalore Literature Festival in November 2018.
Tharoor’s legal team urged the Supreme Court to intervene, leading Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud, along with Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, to assure that the matter would be considered for urgent listing. The case is now scheduled for review by a bench comprising Justice Hrishikesh Roy and Justice R Mahadevan tomorrow.
The defamation case was initiated by BJP leader Rajiv Babbar, following Tharoor’s remarks, which allegedly described Modi as “a scorpion sitting on a Shivling.” After the Delhi High Court refused to quash the case on August 9, Tharoor moved the Supreme Court, seeking relief from the trial court’s order.
This case adds to the ongoing legal challenges faced by political figures over public remarks, with Tharoor hoping the Supreme Court will dismiss the defamation suit.
