Seventh Circuit Judge Shares Experience of Sexism at T14 Law School

Judge Ilana Diamond Rovner of the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals recently opened up about the sexism she faced during her time at Georgetown Law School in the 1960s, shedding light on the challenges women in law have historically encountered.

Recalling her experience, Judge Rovner revealed that on the very first day of class on real property, she and her two female classmates were subjected to blatant sexism by their professor, Professor Stetson. He expressed his opposition to women being admitted to the law school by wearing a black armband and assured the women that he would never call on them in class.

Despite initially feeling relieved at the prospect of avoiding the professor’s scrutiny, Judge Rovner’s excitement quickly turned to frustration as she realized the implications of the discrimination they faced. Her friend pointed out the harsh reality: they would never be given a fair chance to participate and succeed in their legal education.

Reflecting on her time at law school, Judge Rovner highlighted the pervasive sexism she and her female peers encountered from both professors and male classmates. They were viewed as outsiders and faced questions about their presence in the law school, with some suggesting they were taking spots that rightfully belonged to men. Additionally, they were subjected to demeaning inquiries about their intentions, such as whether they were seeking husbands rather than pursuing a legal education.

Despite the adversity she faced, Judge Rovner persevered and went on to become the first woman appointed to the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals. Her success serves as a testament to her resilience and determination in overcoming the barriers imposed by systemic sexism in the legal profession.

Judge Rovner’s decision to share her story comes at a crucial time when discussions about gender equality and diversity in the legal field are gaining traction. By speaking out about her experiences, she hopes to inspire future generations of women in law to continue pushing for progress and dismantling entrenched gender biases.

As Judge Rovner prepares to transition to senior status upon confirmation of her successor, her legacy as a trailblazer for women in the legal profession will endure, serving as a reminder of the importance of challenging discrimination and advocating for equality in all aspects of society.
