NCDRC Introduces Hybrid Mode for Consumer Dispute Hearings, Starting April 15

In a move aimed at enhancing accessibility and efficiency in consumer dispute resolution, the National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (NCDRC) has announced the implementation of hybrid mode hearings for consumer cases. Starting from April 15, the commission will conduct hearings both physically and through video conferencing, marking a significant step forward in streamlining the adjudication process.

The decision comes as part of the commission’s efforts to adapt to modern technological advancements while ensuring access to justice for consumers across the country. In its recent practice direction issued on April 10, the NCDRC outlined the framework for conducting hybrid mode hearings, which will involve a combination of physical presence and video conferencing.

Under this new system, the NCDRC will provide virtual conferencing links for all benches through its cause list, eliminating the need for direct communication between the commission and the counsel/parties. This move aims to simplify the process for all involved parties, ensuring seamless access to the proceedings.

Moreover, to facilitate smooth virtual hearings, the commission has specified a minimum internet connection requirement of 2 Mbps for counsel and parties. Additionally, participants can join the VC/hybrid hearings by accessing the online display board and locating the item number corresponding to their case.

While embracing technology for enhanced efficiency, the NCDRC has emphasized the importance of upholding the decorum and protocols observed in physical court proceedings. Counsel and parties appearing via video conferencing are expected to adhere to all courtesies applicable in a traditional courtroom setting.

Furthermore, the commission has assured that any disruptions or security concerns during the hybrid hearings will be promptly addressed, with necessary measures taken to ensure uninterrupted proceedings.

Overall, the introduction of hybrid mode hearings by the NCDRC represents a forward-thinking approach to consumer dispute resolution, leveraging technology to make the legal process more accessible, efficient, and convenient for all stakeholders involved.
