Lucknow Court Sentences Private Individual in Railway Fraud Case

A special CBI court in Lucknow has sentenced Rajesh Kansal, a private citizen, to four years in prison and a fine of Rs 20,000 for causing financial loss to the Indian Railways.

Case Background:

  • The case involved a fraudulent scheme using fake purchase orders and bills, resulting in a loss of Rs 2,55,285 to the Railways.
  • CBI registered the case in 1998 against Rajesh Kansal and other public servants and private individuals.
  • Charges were framed against Kansal in separate proceedings in 2002 and 2015.

Previous Convictions:

  • On March 21, 2024, the same court convicted and sentenced two other individuals involved in the case:
    • Shri Ajay Tiwari, the then Assistant Accountant (DAO, NER, Lucknow)
    • Shri Rajesh Gupta, a private person
  • Both received seven-year prison sentences and a fine of Rs 65,000 each.

Court Proceedings:

  • The trial against Rajesh Kansal involved examining 16 witnesses.
  • The court found him guilty and sentenced him accordingly.

This case highlights the CBI’s ongoing efforts to combat corruption and fraud within the Indian Railways.
