“Indian-Origin Man Pleads Guilty to Sexual Assault in Singapore; Prosecution Calls for Reformative Training”

A 20-year-old Indian-origin man, Sree Kanth Murugan, has pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting a maintenance worker from India in Singapore. The victim’s identity remains protected under a court order.

The incident occurred when Sree violated the worker, who was sleeping at the void deck of a housing block where Sree resided. After the assault, Sree fled the scene upon the victim’s awakening.In addition to the sexual assault charge, another charge of molestation will be taken into consideration during Sree’s sentencing.District Judge Carol Ling has called for probation and reformative training suitability reports before delivering her judgment on May 9. Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP) Ho May Kim has recommended a report to assess Sree’s suitability for reformative training, arguing that probation would not be a realistic option given the gravity of the offence.DPP Ho emphasized the need for rehabilitation in a structured environment like reformative training, highlighting the limited efficacy of probation in deterring such offences.However, Sree’s defense lawyer, Asoka Markandu, expressed astonishment at the prosecution’s objection to probation, advocating instead for a probation suitability report. Asoka argued that his client required guidance and support rather than placement in a rigorous training center.In response, DPP Ho stressed that Sree’s actions constituted a brazen sexual offence, preying on a vulnerable victim while he slept. District Judge Ling agreed with both sides, emphasizing the importance of rehabilitation in sentencing and calling for both suitability reports.The incident occurred on October 27 last year when the victim fell asleep at a void deck after chatting and drinking with a relative. Sree, who arrived later, molested and sexually assaulted the victim before fleeing. Despite the victim’s pursuit, Sree managed to escape but was later apprehended.

Sexual assault carries a penalty of up to 20 years’ imprisonment, along with caning or fines, under Singaporean law. As Sree awaits sentencing, the court’s focus remains on the appropriate rehabilitation measures to address his actions and prevent future offences.
