A Delhi court is expected to deliver its verdict on January 8, 2025, in a high-profile 1984 anti-Sikh riots case against former Congress MP Sajjan Kumar. The case pertains to the alleged killings of Jaswant Singh and his son Tarundeep Singh in the Saraswati Vihar area during the riots.
Special Judge Kaveri Baweja, who was scheduled to announce the decision earlier, deferred the pronouncement on Monday, stating, “January 8 is the next date.” Sajjan Kumar, currently lodged in Tihar Central Jail, attended the proceedings via video conferencing.
The 1984 anti-Sikh riots, which followed the assassination of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, saw widespread violence targeting Sikh communities. The present case alleges that a mob, armed with deadly weapons, attacked Jaswant Singh’s house on November 1, 1984. According to the prosecution, the mob looted and burned the property, killing Jaswant Singh and his son while his wife witnessed the tragedy.
Initially registered at the Punjabi Bagh police station, the case was later transferred to a special investigation team (SIT) for further inquiry. On December 16, 2021, the court framed charges against Kumar, finding sufficient “prima facie” evidence of his involvement. The court noted that Kumar was not only part of the mob but also allegedly led it, encouraging the acts of violence.
Sajjan Kumar, once a prominent Congress leader, has faced multiple allegations related to his role in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. In 2018, the Delhi High Court convicted Kumar in another case tied to the riots, sentencing him to life imprisonment. That judgment marked a turning point in the quest for justice for victims and survivors of the tragic events.
This impending verdict carries significant weight, symbolizing the long-delayed justice for the victims of the anti-Sikh riots, which left an indelible mark on India’s political and social history. The decision may also influence public discourse on accountability for communal violence and the judicial system’s ability to address historical injustices.
All eyes now turn to January 8, when the Delhi court is set to close another chapter in one of the darkest episodes of modern Indian history.
