Lawsuit Challenges Biden-Backed Nevada Lithium Mine, Citing Risks to Endangered Wildflower and Native American Sites
In a federal lawsuit, conservationists and Native American advocates are challenging the U.S. government’s recent approval of a lithium mine in Nevada. The suit, led by the Center for Biological Diversity and the Western Shoshone Defense Project, aims to block the development of Loaner Ltd.’s Rhyolite Ridge lithium boron mine, which is part of the Biden administration’s clean energy push to increase domestic lithium production.
Located near the California border, the mine threatens the rare Tiehm’s buckwheat, a wildflower that exclusively grows in this area. Environmentalists argue that mining activities could endanger the plant’s existence, as the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service had previously classified it as endangered. “One cannot save the planet from climate change while simultaneously destroying biodiversity,” emphasized Fermina Stevens, Director of the Western Shoshone Defense Project.
The plaintiffs also express concern over the mine’s impact on local groundwater resources and cultural sites sacred to the Western Shoshone people, arguing that its development contradicts conservation efforts and threatens biodiversity. This lawsuit spotlights the complexities of balancing clean energy initiatives with the preservation of environmental and cultural heritage, raising questions about sustainable development and climate policy alignment with biodiversity conservation.
