BCI Issues Show-Cause Notices to Bar Association President and General Secretary Over Attack on Senior Advocate Gaurav Bhatia

The Bar Council of India (BCI) has taken swift action in response to the disturbing incident involving Senior Advocate Gaurav Bhatia’s attack at the Session Court premises in Gautam Budh Nagar District. The BCI issued show-cause notices of suspension to the President and General Secretary of the Bar Association following the altercation.

In an urgent bail matter hearing, Bhatia found himself caught amidst a scuffle instigated by ongoing strikes by lawyers. Despite his attempt to enter the courtroom, he and a woman were obstructed by lawyers protesting outside the court, leading to the confrontation.

The BCI has classified this incident as a case of gross professional misconduct, emphasizing that such behavior undermines the integrity of the legal profession and obstructs the administration of justice. Advocates are held to the highest standards of integrity, professionalism, and ethical conduct, and any deviation from these standards warrants disciplinary action.

The show-cause notices serve as a warning to office bearers of the Bar Association, highlighting their accountability under the Advocates Act. They are required to appear before the BCI via video conferencing on 28th March to address the allegations and provide explanations for their actions.
